The root of everything thrown, caught and declared.

A struct, a class or an enum that conforms is throwable; an enum is the natural form: enum ParseError :: [Error] { Empty, BadDigit(char, int) }. cause names the error this one wraps, for a report that walks the chain; the wrapped error is held in the type's own field.
